ZOMG is right. I was frankly doubting the game was still in development, 2D seemed a bit like a lost art over the past few years, but seeing is believing. Thanks SNK, you made my day.

I really can't believe this... I had high, high expectations for SNK Playmore with King of Fighters XII - and somehow they are meeting them.

Seriously.

Hi res sprites? check
non choppy animation? check
Capcom vs Snk style 2D/3D mixed backgrounds and particle special effects? check

Characters look more like their original incarnations, Benimaru and Athena look amazing. I really hope this game puts them back on the chart agian.

I have yet another neo geo machine coming next week, a two slot "goldie". I'm going to have to get a damn X2 machine later this year now. Stupid SNK actually delivering on a promise, what bastards.

About the character roster speculation, it would be fitting, but at the same time very hard, and possibly detrimental, to have a huge cast present in XII.

On one hand, since everyone seems to be turning this into the SFIV VS KOFXII show, where SF is trying to focus on the few core iconic SF characters in order to lure in the "casual" fighting game fans by not overwhelming them with a picking screen with 40+ little headshots, KOF should go all out in the opposite extreme and throw in every possible fighter they can get their hands on, just for the purpose of having such a situation that Capcom is trying to avoid. Personally that would make me grin.

But, it's not all sunshine and rainbows out there. How long has it taken to get up to this point? Three years to get a few seconds of video footage of six characters. Drawing frames of animation, especially ones as detailed as KOF seems to be using, is hugely time consuming. If we want to play this game before Christmas, SNK needs to keep the roster manageable. That also helps with the inevitable problem of throw-away characters, keep the roster small and made up of quality fighters and the game will shine.

Also, one thing we should remember, whether we want to or not, is that SNK will be reusing all the assets they're creating for this game in future iterations. We'll be seeing these same sprites well into KOF XV I'd wager. It would make sense then for SNK to start small, and use future sequels to expand the roster.

Small note, SNK put the AOU vids of KOF XII, Samurai Spirits Sen, and KOF 98UM on www.showtime.jp. Unfortunately, they IP block non-Japanese connection, so no direct feed (maybe not that "direct?") footage goodness for you. Jerks...

If you are L337 enough to have a Japanese IP address, the rink is here:

I have a feeling we'll have about 7 teams in this game (opposed to the 11 we had in XI). Mostly just the major players with maybe two new characters, but I'm fine with that. I really hope they work on the character's moves, so many have lost important moves and gained BS ones to replace them.

I also hope more garou characters start coming in.

I think so too. I actually wish they would do a sort of KOF 95 "Re-Bout," using only those characters, but seeing Ash in the trailer spoils that plan. I don't mind him as much as other people do, but he's really where I draw the line. Any of the other characters introduced since 2000 have sucked (from a design perspective). I do have hope though, since SNK seems to be taking this game really seriously. Even if they include some of the reject characters, they at least won't spoil the game. (Bao anyone?)

And instead of shoe-horning in characters from a great game, how about we finally get that Garou sequel (using the same animation techniques as KOF XII), hmm? C'mon SNK, you can do it, just hire more animators using all that cash you're raking in selling that Dokimajo crap. And give me Dokimajo 2 plz...

I've heard the first location tests are going to begin in June.

If that's the case, I'm truly shocked.

I'm still waiting on confirmation yet, so we'll just have to wait and see...

No tag = YAY!

Some sort of BS going on at the edges of the stage? I don't like the sound of that. I reminds me of the awful "wire damage" crap from 2001.

They've been sitting on this for three years already, I feel it's about time we have something playable, even if it's rough. That's the purpose of a location test, to get player feedback before the game is finished.

Yeah, this may be interesting. Hokuto no Ken has a 'wall' and 'ground' combo system in place and it ended up breaking the game. With as much disadvantage as you already have in KOF by being in a corner, adding to that is a risky proposition...
